Wk 4 Environment Sketch

Here is my HW for week 4. I only got one lighting study per scene sadly but I will continue working on them! I also did revisions on last week's HW and some black & white studies from life.

I found myself wanting to draw the scene and then do the b&w studies on top afterwards (b/c my proportions sometimes get funky or I don't fit in as much as I intended to, etc.). Is that a good idea or should we just do the b&w shapes straight? Maybe mix them together?

Corrected the above by raising the horizon and added some lighting. The scanner kind of upped the contrast  but I can show what it really looks like in class. Kinda had a hard to deciding how to light this scene, I realize I probably should've done the 3 small marker studies first...
I thought the round lights looked like paper lanterns so I tried to change them into such and wanted to make it look kind of like a festival night scene ^^. The scanner really made the darks a lot darker in this one so I can show the original in class. I spent too long on this so it took away time from me to do more studies... Definitely need more practice on lighting!

Here are pics for the B&W studies:

Here is some revised linework and some composition ideas I was toying with. I need to work on that, the pics look lopsided when I flip them around and stuff ><"

Environment Week 3

This class is so fun! Definitely feeling all the +1 learning opportunities out there haha. Anyways, here is my blogpost!

I only got 2 refinements in sadly (they take a long time!) but definitely feel like I learned a lot! I realize I need to look out a lot more for my composition during my quick sketches! Maybe more wide-screen sketches would be helpful too, since it's tricky to convert aspect-ratio!
Quick sketches in Old Town Pasadena.
Happy Chinese New Year! Chinese restaurant for the New Year. Trying to place those tables and chairs!

Tracing paper over sketches to figure out perspective grid and structural stuff.

Came up with this idea for my restaurant project during the structural pass of this drawing.

More structural stuff..

Trying to figure out buildings and compositions for next refinements (I didn't get around to them.)

FG, MG, BG for one of my refinements.

FG, MG, BG for my refinements. I tried out various ideas for one of them.

Original thumbnails and sketch for one of my refinements.

Structural Pass on Old Town Sketch.

Line Drawing Refinement for Old Town Sketch. I drew super light so had to darken a little in Photoshop. ^.^

Line Drawing Refinement for Restaurant Interior. Had to darken in Photoshop again. ^.^"

Looking forward to the lighting assignment! Too bad I won't have 4 to work on but hopefully 2 will be good enough.

Environment Sketching Week 2

This is my sketch from memory of "Freshly Squeezed" juice bar in Pasadena:

This is my historical restaurant, a quaint hipster spot in downtown Fullerton called "Rutabegorz":

And this is Honey Boba in Arcadia:

These are some preliminary designs for the project I started on:

And here are pics of the places I went:

Sketching for Environment Class!

Long time no post! I've been busy drawing, just hiding a little from the "public" eye until I feel I've gotten much better aha. But since I have to post on the blog for my Sketching from Environment class, I figured I might as well share the same post here too. So without further ado, my homework! One step closer to mastery!!! These are copy and pasted posts so please excuse if some of the language is a little confusing.

Here are my drawings! They were a mess so I organized it a little so that you could see the on-site sketch and the refined ones next to it.

Winter Break Sketches:

This is the one I did on location at the Huntington Library when I went over winter break. I did not have this in class however, so I drew the following from my head:

Homework:

On location to the left and refined at home to the right. I chose not to refine the lone one up top aha.

The following are sketches I had to do while stopped at a red light (I was in the passenger seat, not drawing and driving!). So they were really scribbly and a little difficult to refine when I got back home:

This is a sketch I did on location but have yet to refine:

I forgot I was supposed to do 3 thumbnails before doing a sketch until today, so these are some thumbnails I did after I realized! I haven't been able to do my large sketches from them yet though:

And these are the refinements of sketches I did in class. The splattered one to the left is on location aha:

Looking forward to improving and drawing lots! :D

My Portfolio

I have a new portfolio blog, http://steffiwongportfolio.blogspot.com/ , but I'll still be posting my other works here! This is what I have so far, but rest assured, it will be changed and added to as I create more pieces! All the digital works were done in Adobe Illustrator.

Hermann Hesse, my favorite author. I love his work "Demian", it was so inspiring to me!

Mao Asada, my favorite female skater. The genuine passion and love for skating she displays on ice and in her work ethic is absolutely inspiring!
